Nicholas Canellakis

Nicholas Canellakis is one of the most sought-after cellists of his generation, acclaimed for his superb solo performances and rich, alluring tone. Described by The New Yorker as a “superb young soloist” and praised by The New York Times for his impassioned playing, Canellakis has a multifaceted career as a soloist, chamber musician, filmmaker, and composer/arranger.

Concert highlights include performances with the Virginia, Albany, Delaware, Stamford, Richardson, Lansing, and Bangor Symphonies, the Erie Philharmonic, The Orchestra Now, the New Haven Symphony as Artist-in-Residence, and the American Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. He frequently collaborates with pianist-composer Michael Stephen Brown, performing in prestigious venues such as Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, the Four Arts in Palm Beach, New Orleans Friends of Chamber Music, the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and Wolf Trap.

An artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Canellakis regularly performs at Alice Tully Hall and on international tours, including London’s Wigmore Hall, The Louvre in Paris, the Seoul Arts Center in Korea, and the Shanghai and Taipei National Concert Halls. He is a regular guest at leading music festivals, including Santa Fe, Ravinia, Music@Menlo, Bard, Bridgehampton, La Jolla, Hong Kong, Moab, Chamberfest Cleveland, and Music in the Vineyards. As the Artistic Director of Chamber Music Sedona, Canellakis has made significant contributions through dynamic programming and community outreach.

A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and New England Conservatory, Canellakis studied under Orlando Cole, Peter Wiley, Paul Katz, and Madeleine Golz. He launched his career with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center through the Bowers Program and has also been in residence at Carnegie Hall with Ensemble Connect.

Canellakis's album with Michael Stephen Brown, (b)romance, features original compositions and arrangements and is released by First Hand Records. In addition to his musical talents, Canellakis is an accomplished filmmaker and actor, known for his comedy web series "Conversations with Nick Canellakis" and his award-nominated film “Thin Walls,” available on Amazon Prime.
